MSU tears down former residence halls

Morehead State University is tearing down two residence halls.

Wilson Hall and Regents Hall have not been used as residence halls for the past two years.

“They are outdated dorms and the cost of updating them was very expensive,” said Assist. VP for Facilities Management, Gene Caudill. “We did a master housing plan and the decision was made that we would not need the dorms in the future and that we would have to have them demolished in order for future construction of new facilities.”

Preliminary work, such as cleaning the building out and removal of furniture, was done before demolition.

MSU contracted the project out to Independent Excavating Company, which is based Maysville. The actual demolition started this week.

“The Student Recreation Center will be constructed on the upper end of the site,” he said. “It has not yet been determined as what would be constructed on the lower end of the one-acre lot.”

The university is currently taking bids for the construction project for the student center, which is slated to begin sometime in August.
