Deli and donuts return to downtown

June 26, 2012 —        After much anticipation, Allen’s IGA is opening its doors Thursday at 7 a.m. following a full facelift to the former Slone’s Signature Market in the Morehead Plaza.

The popular deli menu and handmade donuts once produced for the Morehead masses are being served again by familiar faces.

New cash registers, coolers, updated meat and produce areas, repairs and fresh paint have brightened the store’s appearance.

“We have really changed the appearance of the store,” said Lee Allen. “It has been a lot of hard work and a tremendous amount of hours have been put in but we are happy to say we are ready to open.”

New and familiar products bearing the IGA name will be carried in the store along with other national brands. “Cold beer will be sold in one to two weeks once we receive our license,” said Allen.

The Allens said most of the Slone’s staff had returned, including deli manager Stanley Messer. “We have many new cashiers working on new registers, so bear with us during our soft opening Thursday while we get up and running,” said Barb Allen Cornett.

“Yes, the warm, freshly made donuts will be served once again,” she said. “And I will be one of the first in line to get one.”

David McRoberts, a 36-year employee who started with the Allen’s in Grayson, could do nothing but smile, he said.

“I am thrilled to be back working with Allens again,” he said. “I can’t do anything but keep smiling about this positive turn-around the Allens are making with the store.”

Store hours will be Monday – Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning Thursday.
