Vikings take Tigers, fall to Raceland
The Rowan County Vikings are 2-3 on their season after falling to Raceland (46-43) on the road Monday night and taking down Paintsville (65-45) in their first home game of the season Tuesday.
At Raceland on Monday, the two teams were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. Raceland jumped out to a 23-15 lead at the half and held Rowan to 12 points in the third. The Vikings outscored the Rams 16-13 in the final round, but it wasn’t enough to take the win.
“We had struggled through the first quarter and just didn’t play well,” Coach Shawn Thacker told The Morehead News. “They went on a few runs that made a big difference in the game during the second quarter. We played hard and put in a good effort but couldn’t get over the hump.”
Adam Wing led the Vikings in scoring with 13 points. Corey Hunter put up nine and Jacob Ginter sank six. Jon Stacy nailed one from outside the perimeter while Darrell Cross, Jesse Jennings and Tyler Thacker had one each from the field. Overall, Rowan went 7-for-10 at the charity stripe.
“Defensively we did a pretty good job,” Thacker said. “We had a few crutial set backs, but in low scoring games that gets highlighted. Any time you turn it over in the last few minutes that spells trouble.”
Rowan played host to the Tigers in the first home game of the season on Tuesday, taking a 65-45 victory.
The two teams seemed well matched in the first quarter, with Rowan leading by two. The Vikings nailed 17 points in the second while allowing just five from Paintsville. Rowan out ran the Tigers in the second half, leading by 17 at the end of the third, and jumping out to a 20-point win in the final minutes of the game.
“Other than the Fleming game, I think we have done a pretty decent job defensively this season,” Thacker said. “Turnovers and bad shot selection has been our problem, but a lot of teams that have kids coming in from football, soccer and cross country deal with that. It takes awhile to get things put together.”
Wing was once again the leading scorer for Rowan with 19 points. Cross and Ginter each put up 18 while Corey Hunter added eight. Freshman Dalton Stacy got two off the bench. The Viks hit 66-percent from the line.
The Vikings play host to Menifee County tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. Menifee is 5-0 on their season, coming off an 85-75 win over West Carter Tuesday night.
“Menifee is one of the top teams in the region,” Thacker said. “They are very athletic and well coached. This game will be a good chance for us. It will be a big test to see where we are.”
