Duncan is new advertising director

The new advertising director at The Morehead News has been in the newspaper business more than 40 years, working in all aspects of bringing a quality product to the community.

Dan Duncan began work in the industry in 1962 when he was hired at The Ashland Daily Independent as a paper carrier. His career continued at The Sunday and Daily Independent and The Independent until he was promoted to advertising director for The Morehead News Group on Jan. 2, 2007. The Independent and Morehead News Group are owned by Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. (CNHI) based in Birmingham, Ala.

“Dan is a great addition to The Morehead News team,” said Rob McCullough, publisher of The Morehead News Group. “His experience, commitment and dedication to the community and our advertisers will be a great benefit to this area.”

Duncan worked part-time from 1964-67 as a “hand-stuffer,” and was press off-bearer, mail clerk and truck driver in the circulation/mailroom from 1964-68.

He served two years in the U.S. Army as a Pershing missile crewman in Germany from 1969-71 and returned to work in the mailroom at The Independent in July 1971. He was named TV Times editor in September 1974 and transferred to advertising in 1984, working as an advertising account executive.

Duncan was promoted to ad services coordinator in May 1996 and designed a system for tracking, printing and composition of electronic ads. He served as interim ad director for several months before being named assistant ad director in March 1999.

He served as internet marketing director and an outside sales representative and was named classified/internet ad supervisor in May 2003 where he built and maintained area business Web sites and internal packages and as well built and maintained The Independent’s Web site.

Duncan also was named CNHI Bluegrass Group Internet Ad Coordinator to help group newspapers go live with new Zope Web site platforms.

He resigned his long-term association with The Independent on Dec. 31, 2006 to accept the advertising director position with The Morehead News Group this month.

Duncan and his wife Debra Cooper Duncan have two children, Sharon and Danny. He has an associate degree from Ashland Community College and attended Marshall University and Morehead State University. He is a member of the Grace Nazarene Church in Ashland and serves as the head of trustees on the church’s board.

He’s also won multiple awards for his advertising promotions.

“I look forward to the new challenges and working in the community,” Duncan said. “Rob and I had a great working relationship when he was in Ashland and I’m glad he’s given me the opportunity to work with him again.”
