They’re trading knives and fishing stories in the middle of the showroom at Charlie’s Cabinets and Rob’s Gun and Pawn.
But that’s just the way owners Rob and Charlotte (Charlie) Combess like it.
Anyone is welcome to congregate here: contractors who have been rained out for the day or potential customers who just want to shoot the breeze. The Combesses hope to create an atmosphere of casualness and friendliness in their store.
Several businesses are offered at the 135 Pinecrest Drive location: Charlie’s Cabinets & Floor Coverings, Rob’s Gun and Pawn and Hummingbird Gardens. The floral business is operated out of the Combess home but some annuals, perennials or vegetable plants are available here. There’s also cat and dog food, University of Kentucky prints and custom bridles, halters and other horse tack for sale.
The couple knows that in today’s sluggish economy it’s better to generalize than specialize.
Charlie’s Cabinets had been located downtown near Eagle Landing Pet Hospital, but it moved for more visibility, meaning a better location and more traffic for the new gun and pawn business.
The cabinet and flooring jobs have been steady despite the economic slow down and the business clients have been very supportive of a locally-owned venture. In the first week of moving to the new store, there were three new kitchen remodel orders to coordinate.
Charlie and Rob give back to the community, too. They help sports teams and fire departments with silent auction sponsorships, support events like Hometown Holiday and referee youth basketball games.
“The community helps us so we try to help the community,” Charlie said. “We try to give back as much as we can.”
Both husband and wife are 1984 graduates of Rowan County Senior High School and Morehead State University alumni. Daughter Krysta is on the RCSHS basketball team and son Kyle is a member of the middle school band. Another daughter, Samantha, is a MSU student. Both their parents worked at MSU and Rob’s father started his own business.
Rob’s Gun & Pawn offers tools, weapons, jewelry and musical instruments.
Charlie’s side of the business offers Masterbuilt cabinets made in Kentucky, solid plywood cabinets from Tru-Wood, granite to Formica countertops, carpet and flooring from laminate to wood, tile or vinyl.
Rob installed all the cabinets himself for the last three years until the pawn shop took away his time. Charlie designs and customizes her kitchen remodels, looking for the best deal for customers with what’s available for their money.
Their biggest challenges as business owners are that they have little storage room for buying in quantity and they don’t offer credit card financing because of stringent credit policies.
Despite those drawbacks, the couple is one example of this community’s locally owned and prospering businesses.
