Friday, Aug. 17, 2012 — Rowan County Clerk Jean W. Bailey has received a grant totaling $10,125 from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) to preserve and manage local government records. KDLA is an agency of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
Twenty-six grants have been awarded for a total of $345,756 from fiscal year 2013 Local Records Grant Program funds. During the program’s 27-year history, a total of more than $19 million has been distributed across Kentucky and included grants to all 120 counties.
The grant funds will be used for salary support for scanning, indexing and downloading voter registration cards and marriage licenses into an imaging system.
“The Local Records Program provides grant funds and direct service to local agencies for the purpose of preserving, managing and providing access to local government records throughout the Commonwealth,” Gov. Steve Beshear said. “These services will ensure that citizens will have access to those records in the future. With the issuance of these grant funds, local agencies will be able to fully utilize new digital technologies in providing in-agency access to the records as well as online access in the future.”
KDLA’s Local Records Program helps to preserve, protect and make available records with continuing archival value and to assist local agencies with records management through grant support, training and direct service. With four regional administrators covering the state and working with local officials, KDLA ensures professional archival and records management assistance in county and city offices, school districts, and health departments. Grants have supported work in microfilming, preservation, equipment, automated indexing, digital imaging systems and codification of ordinances.
