The editor:
The Gateway Homeless Shelter has received several phone calls regarding the article "Cold and Homeless...in Rowan County" which appeared in the Dec. 23, 2008 edition of The Morehead News. I would like to offer some clarification of the article based on the many questions and comments we received.
First, Gateway House makes every effort to assist as many individuals as our facility can safely house at a given time. When our shelter is at full capacity, we make referrals to shelters in Ashland or Lexington until space is available at our shelter. We do not turn away any individual or family without making all necessary and appropriate referrals. Our shelter remains at full capacity throughout the winter months, and our waiting list typically grows during the winter months. However, we continue to take the time to speak with each and every person who requests shelter and determine how we can best meet their short and long-term needs, even if space is not immediately available at the shelter.
We are blessed with a strong network of cooperation with other agencies, organizations and churches in this county and surrounding counties, and we will continue to take time for each and every individual and family who comes to Gateway House seeking shelter or other services.
