The editor:
In the Dec. 14 issue of the Independent a letter writer kicked a stone and started an avalanche when she wrote of her belief about the Bible.
She was on the atheism/secular wagon, and that stirred up quite a hornet’s nest. The letters in the paper were about two for, and 12 against her belief/writing. The church people took up arms to defend their beliefs, while the free thinkers listen in silence. We don’t need a church.
My name is Zeigler, and can be spelled two ways, Zei and/or Zie. I’ve often been told I spell it wrong, that it’s i before e except after c or?
When I went to my home in Penna, where the woods are full of us, I looked in the phonebook and found a column and a half of Zie’s, and a page and a half of Zei’s, so the advisors were wrong.
We live side by side, go to the church of our choice, or stay home, mow the lawn, go fishing, to a ball game or a race track, a beer or two or three.
To those of you that think there’s a person or thing up there somewhere, it boggles the mind to think of a city block sized computer to keep tabs on everything everyone everywhere ever done. Even a one on one thing is just as absurd. When one dies they can walk on streets of gold and live in eternity. Gold is probably slippery and one can fall easily, or is that when the wings are used? If you don’t make the grade, you are thrown in a volcano and burn forever, which also is not possible, but good scare tactics.
In the Christian religion they celebrate a baby’s birthday where the gift giving started. It’s called Christmas, and much money is spent for gifts. Take that out of the celebration and it will disappear.
About evolution, life began in the sea by cells dividing, then fish that crawled out on the land. Look at most mammals and you can see signs of dividing: two eyes, ears, nose, arms, legs, lungs, kidneys, and heart, even part of our reproductive system. All are frozen in developing by their own adaptation. We still crawl before we walk.
Churches survive by people paying to have a high cathedral or some other place built, so they can listen to someone tell them what they want to hear. All this costs money, lots of money. One standing rule in one religion used to be 10 percent of your salary to the church. I’ll take my 10 percent and go to Wal-Mart and probably see you there.

Bring better movies to Morehead
Don’t you love a good movie? We certainly do BUT for me that does not include “R” rated films. Of the seven movies advertised in the 1/20/12 issue of the News, five were rated “R.”

Abortion advocate change of mind
As the new year begins, it is quite common to see printed in a newspaper or magazine a list of the names of prominent citizens who passed away in the preceding year. I recently came across such a list, and the name of one individual in particular caught my attention: Dr. Bernard Nathanson.

Large sign is unsightly
While driving to Morehead today, I was dismayed to see that Cracker Barrel has erected one of their typical ultra-high “signs on a stick.” I somehow thought that Morehead’s sign ordinance would protect our community from this unsightliness and that the sign would be the same height as those of surrounding businesses.

Political cartoon was off the mark
I don’t know how the political cartoons you publish are chosen, but I take exception to the one in the Dec. 27, 2011 issue of the paper. The cartoonist obviously does not agree with Time magazine’s choice of The Protester as Person of the Year.
