The editor:
I wanted to write concerning two recent letters to the editor that proposed to explain the problems with socialism and with capitalism.
There is an Old Testament story that tells of a day when, due to the wickedness of the nation Israel, the Ark of the Covenant was taken in battle by the enemies of Israel. On that day a baby was born to a dying mother and they named that baby Ichabod; the glory has departed. The point I would like to make is simply that the glory has departed from America.
The underlying problem with both arguments for capitalism and socialism is that they are based on covetousness. Our founders stated time and time again that our nation, our Constitution, is only adequate for a moral people, people who are able to govern themselves. We no longer live in such a society where citizens are moral and able to govern themselves. We look at the corruption among our leaders and we often fail to see that they are only mirror images of those of us who vote them in. The reason why capitalism has not worked is because it is no longer undergirded by morality. And the reason socialism too will fail is because it is not undergirded by a real morality. Both socialists and capitalists will continue to move with covetousness to try to get what they think is their share of the pie. But in the end we will still end in disaster because we have failed to realize the simple biblical truth:
“Righteousness exalts a nation and sin is a reproach to any people.” America does not need more government or less government. America needs repentance. It is not economics that will bless America; blessings must come from another source.
We maintain that the problem with America is not economic, but rather moral. God cannot and will not bless a wicked nation.
