Is alcoholism a disease?

The editor:

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Cor. 6:9-10

If alcoholism is a disease, it would be the only disease bought and sold on the open market. It would become the lone disease which can only be acquired through the will of the victim.

If addiction to alcohol is a disease, it would be the only disease exclusively requisitioned through a license issued by the government. It would be the only habit-forming disease, and the only disease which results in violent death on the highway.

If alcoholism is a disease, it would be the solitary disease which generates revenue for the government, and the only disease directly related to breaking of the law. Alcoholism would be the only disease uniquely spread through advertising and the only disease without a germ or virus.

Is alcoholism a disease or an acquired addiction? Is it a disease or is the disease, in reality, the excuse?

If alcoholism is considered a disease, then it must not be our fault if we contract it. It must not be our problem, but it is definitely our sin, no matter what we may call it.

If we cannot fully recognize our own sin, how then can we repent from it?
