The editor:
Recently, several caring and responsible citizens of Morehead came together to form a Right to Life Chapter for Morehead and surrounding counties. This organization provides educational information about all aspects of life: not just the rights of the unborn, but also the rights of the elderly, the handicapped and those who have no one to speak for them. This local affiliation is being organized to help educate the general public about the pro-life vision, advancing pro-life legislation and helping to elect pro-life men and women to public office.
Most people are familiar with the three major Constitutional rights that we as Americans have, the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Unfortunately, millions of our unborn children have been denied these rights in that we have allowed more than 50 million babies to be aborted in the United States since the infamous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
Presently, another crisis is looming in Congress in that the current leadership is taking aim at unborn children and their mothers with a radical pro-abortion agenda that includes the so called Freedom of Choice Act, “FOCA”, a bill that would invalidate virtually all state and federal laws limiting abortion, including parental notification laws, and make partial-birth abortion once again legal. Other anti-life measures of FOCA being considered are:
• Require taxpayers to fund abortion for any reason.
• Force hospitals and health care professionals to provide abortions.
• Fund organizations, like Planned Parenthood, that perform and/or promote abortion, and
• Force employer health insurance plans to cover abortions.
You may be familiar with the famous quote by Edmund Burke, who said that for evil to prevail, the only thing necessary is for good people to do nothing. Surely, abortion or the arbitrary taking of anyone’s life is evil and should not be tolerated.
Morehead is fortunate in that we have the Hope Pregnancy Care Center, which is a local organization that provides assistance to women who find themselves in need of counseling because of a suspected or unplanned pregnancy. Now, having a local Right to Life affiliation is another positive step to help promote life in all its forms. If you would like to be a part of this movement, you are invited to the next Right to Life meeting, which is scheduled to be held at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Meeting Room A, 2nd Floor on Tuesday, Aug. 25 from 6:15-7:30 p.m.
