MOREHEAD

MARCH 5 —     A gas station employee posted bond after police say he’s stolen thousands of dollars from the business.

Phillip J. Bushong, 24, of Morehead is charged with theft by unlawful taking over $10,000 after station owners claimed he’s taken approximately $18,000 worth of money, merchandise and gasoline while working at the station from November 2009 to January 2010.

According to police, Bushong would take merchandise and hit the ‘no sale’ button on the cash register while pretending to get change. Police say station owners reported that other cashiers enter the register an average of two or three times a shift, while Bushong was found on one of his shifts to enter the register for change a total of 78 times.

“He would take merchandise,” Morehead Police Detective Sgt. Matt Salley said. “Some of it he would give to people, some of it he would void off of the register and take the money.”

Bushong was taken to the Rowan County Detention center where he posted 50 percent of a $15,000 partially secured bond. Theft by unlawful taking over $10,000 is a Class C felony.

The investigation is ongoing by Salley.
