A Mt. Sterling couple was arrested Wednesday after Kentucky State Police responded to a non-injury accident on I-64.
The accident happened between Morehead and Olive Hill. Kevin W. Donathan, 33, of 305 Willow St., was arrested at 10:29 a.m. for driving under the influence.
Donathan was eastbound, driving a Standlee Hay Company truck. He was to drive the truck from Lexington to Bordentown, N.J. Witnesses said the truck took out about 200 feet of guardrail and scattered its load of hay bales over a hill.
“Upon making contact with the operator, I noticed that his eyes were constricted and he appeared to be unsteady on his feet,” Trooper Chris Jones wrote in his citation obtained at the courthouse. “I asked him if he had taken any type of controlled substance that day and he did. He advised that he took oxycodone and hydrocodone earlier in the morning.”
Donathan failed sobriety tests, according to court records. He was taken to the Rowan County Detention Center.
Christina E. Moore, 25, also of 305 Willow St., was Donathan’s passenger. She was arrested for several drug possession charges and public intoxication.
Her speech was slurred and she was extremely unsteady on her feet when police arrived, according to Trooper Scott Caudill's report.
“I noticed pill residue in her nose,” Caudill said. “She admitted to snorting a Lortab and half of a 30 milligram Percocet.”
Police found 24, 15 milligram Oxycodone and two pieces of unidentified “bar type pills” in Moore's purse.
Donathan remains in jail. Moore is lodged at the Carter County Detention Center.
Clean up crews were at the scene until at least 5 p.m.
