Former resident found guilty in samurai sword case

Man claims self defense

A Mason County jury on July 15 found Jason L. Mullikin, formerly of Morehead, guilty of burglary second-degree, two counts of wanton endangerment first-degree, assault third degree, and two counts of terroristic threatening third degree, according to court officials.

On Sept. 18, 2008, Mullikin reportedly assaulted Kent Fields, went into Fields’ house, took a samurai sword, then began chasing Fields and another neighbor Frank Fryman with the sword, while telling them he was going to kill them, according to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office for Mason County.

The Maysville Dispatch immediately received at least 10 calls to Emergency 911. When officers arrived from the Maysville Police Department, Mullikin fled to his parent’s residence. After brief inquiries, Mullikin was extracted from the residence and placed into custody. The sword was recovered from the Mullikin residence, police said. While being placed in a cruiser, Mullikin assaulted Officer Zachary Sutton.

During the two-day trial, Mullikin represented himself with assistance from Steve Geurin of Morehead and Erik Wilbekin of Covington. Mullikin contended that his residence had been repeatedly invaded by Fields, he was being poisoned by Fields and law enforcement would do nothing to investigate his allegations. He said in court that he was merely taking matters into his own hands by defending himself from Fields and Fryman.

At the conclusion of the trial, the Mason County jury found Mullikin guilty on all counts of the indictment, set the maximum penalty on each count, to run consecutive for a total sentence of 20 years imprisonment. The jury further recommended that Mullikin undergo a mental health evaluation and receive treatment while in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Judge Stockton Wood, Mason Circuit Court, ordered Mullikin be held at the Mason County Detention Center. Final sentencing has been tentatively set for Aug. 14 in Mason County.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary W. Adkins of Morehead prosecuted Mullikin. LT Justin Horch of the Maysville Police Department investigated the criminal charges.
