Former jailer Tim Bryant has pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a vehicle.
Bryant pled guilty to the charges Aug. 16 in Rowan District Court.
He had his license suspended for 45 days and was ordered to complete an alcohol education class on the DUI charge. He will pay a $35 fine for the open beverage container offense.
Bryant, 49, was originally charged with DUI under aggravating circumstances, but on a motion from the county attorney, Judge Don Blair dismissed the aggravator because it did not meet the definition by state statutes.
Bryant, of 11925 Cranston Road, was arrested July 27 at 10:21 p.m. outside the KY 377 Country Market, located about two miles from his home.
Bryant was observed traveling north on Cranston Road at 9:45 p.m. when he pulled into the market parking lot and then entered the store, according to a court citation.
A trooper with the Kentucky State Police said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Bryant inside the market. Outside, the trooper gave Bryant a field sobriety test, which he failed, according to the citation. Bryant apparently refused a Breathalyzer test.
Bryant, who is on the Nov. 2 ballot as a candidate for jailer, was elected to that office in 2002 and served one term.

Parking issues top Council agenda
Administrative matters took up much of the agenda at Monday’s regular meeting of the Morehead City Council, but the perennial downtown parking issue arose again. Council discussed problems with persons being ticketed during downtown events such as Noon Tunes, and passed a motion directing Mayor David Perkins to identify means to encourage citizens to patronize Main Street businesses over the summer, which may include relaxing downtown parking rules.
