Sandy Knipp, 62, of Morehead, a longtime Bluegrass radio host, musician and songwriter, died Wednesday at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson First Church of God. Knipp, a retired public school educator in Rowan County, was the founding director of Morehead State University’s Kentucky Center for Traditional Music.
He was the host of “Bluegrass Diversion” on Morehead State Public Radio for more than 20 years.
“Sandy was a wonderful ambassador for this institution, for Bluegrass music, for KCTM and public radio,” said MSU President Wayne D. Andrews. “He will be greatly missed.”
Knipp received MSU’s Appalachian Treasure Award in 2002 for his lifetime commitment to Bluegrass music and music education.
Paul Hitchcock, general manager of MSPR, said of him:
“Sandy was a good friend and colleague at Morehead State Public Radio. His love of music of all kinds and dedication to education was evident in everything he did. He took pride in the success of young people and he helped many along the way.”
Knipp is survived by his wife, the former Deborah Maple, and several other family members.
