Smoke escaped from behind the front siding of a local pizza establishment Thursday afternoon causing the building to be evacuated.
A manager smelled smoke and then saw smoke outside the front of Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, 520 East Main Street, then contacted the Morehead Fire Department about 5 p.m.
“Smoke was smoldering from mulch in front of the pizza restaurant,” said Morehead Fire Department Chief Jeff Anderson. “It started to go up behind the siding of the building. We cut into the siding to extinguish the smoke.”
Firefighters responded to the scene within three minutes, Anderson said.
Morehead City Police also responded to the scene.
The fire’s cause was ruled undetermined.
