Police chase fleeing Wal-Mart shoplifting suspect

A 21-year-old Morehead man charged with shoplifting was released from jail Friday after he led the Morehead Police on an alleged foot chase across the store’s parking lot and then hid in a culvert along Triplett Creek.

Jacob Johnson was released from the Rowan County Detention Center the same day of his arrest after posting a $750 full-cash bond on one charge of theft by unlawful taking under $300, said MPD Chief Mike Adams.

“He fled the store when Wal-Mart employees confronted him,” Adams commented Monday. “The suspect then attempted to elude capture by entering Triplett Creek. But after a brief search, Patrolman Steve Mirus located Johnson in the culvert near the creek.”

Police did not say what Johnson was attempting to steal from the store. The incident remains under investigation by the MPD.
