Foothills Quilt Trail members invite you to join the celebration of the annual Rowan County Quilt Show. The quilting group will host some free quilting classes during Rowan County Quilt Week starting Monday, March 16.
President of the Foothills Quilt Trail Jean Cline encourages everyone to attend the classes.
A Machine Quilting 101 class will be conducted at Rowan County Senior High School’s Home Economics Department. The class will start at 6 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m. on March 16.
“In this class you will learn how to use your machine to finish those quilt tops,” Cline said. “We will explore free motion quilting, cross hatching, marking and quilting stencils, and quilting with your walking foot.”
Cline suggests individuals bring their own machine so they will learn how to set up for quilting. Vicki McCarty from the Calico Patch Quilt Shop will be teaching this class.
The Molas Appliqué class will be held at the Rowan County Health Department from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17. Nancy Wayman will teach this course.
“You will learn a little art history,” Cline said. “The techniques she will be teaching, she learned from the Indians of Panama.”
Individuals will need to bring the following items to class: small scissors, a short quilting or embroidery needle, a small embroidery hoop and a thimble, she added.
The Stained Glass Rose class will be located at the Rowan County Health Center 1 to 4p.m. on Thursday, March. 19. Linda Lowe will be teaching the course.
“Participants will learn the basics of fabric stained glass by making a 12-inch square block of a rose bud,” Lowe said. “Bring black sewing thread, appliqué needles, fabric scissors, thimble and washable glue stick.”
The Baby Jane Sampler course will be Friday, March 20 at the Morehead Conference Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Cheryl Whitt conducting the class.
“This project is based on the style of Dear Jane Reproductions Civil War Quilts,” Cline said. “Learn techniques for transferring drawn diagrams into rotary cut blocks, hand appliqué, reverse appliqué, and using freezer paper templates for machine and hand stitching. A pattern will be provided.”
Kathy Vigger will teach the Artist’s Trading Cards (ATC) class on Saturday, March 21 1 to 4p.m. at the Morehead Conference Center.
“In this class, you will be using fabrics to make fabric trading cards,” Cline said. “You will learn techniques using under, ruler, beads and other embellishments.”
Students should bring an apron or smock to wear while working on the project. Cline suggests that individuals bring basic sewing supplies, scrap fabrics, rubber stamps, beads and other embellishments.
Lunch can be purchased at the Morehead Conference Center. Items on the menu are barbeque sandwiches, hot dogs, nachos with cheese, popcorn, chips, decaf and regular coffee, bottled water and soda.
There will be a quilt show on March 21from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Morehead Conference Center.
The Foothills Quilt Trail, Folk Art Center and The Little Foundation sponsored the classes and the quilt show.
