Frontier Housing goes green

Frontier Housing is going green and in honor of Earth Day the members of the Frontier Housing organization hosted a groundbreaking for their first “Green Build Kentucky” home design April 22.

The organization revealed its first “Green Build Kentucky” plan design at the groundbreaking ceremony. The featured floor plan, “The Carew,” was named in honor of Frontier Housing’s co-founder Tom Carew.

The “Green Build Kentucky” plan, an energy efficient designed floor plan, will be incorporated in every home built for Kentucky residents. It is based on the National Energy Star Program and the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Guidelines, according to the Frontier Housing organization. It contains a 1,274-square foot floor plan with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

“The Green Build Kentucky homes are environmentally sound and affordable,” said Stacey Epperson, Frontier Housing President and CEO.

The Frontier Housing organization makes sure their customers are well satisfied with their products and that each home is truly economical, she said.

The organization takes care of a lot preparation and design. It also promotes conservation of energy and water. So every home is energy and water efficient and built according to each family’s needs. Comfort and indoor air quality is also a priority. Frontier oversees all operation, maintenance and education of each Green Built Kentucky home. Frontier Housing makes a global impact by building each home with environment friendly products, Epperson said.

State representatives boarded the Clean Energy Hybrid Bus and toured seven Kentucky counties including Rowan. The bus made its stop at Frontier Housing’s Edgewood community located on Rice Road.

“In addition, more than a dozen modest-income homes in seven counties received extensive energy efficiency improvements as a part of Kentucky’s Clean Energy Corps, a program launched by Governor Steve Beshear to reduce energy costs, protect the environment and create thousands of ‘green collar’ jobs,” Epperson said.

Each tour site featured an open house so that the public could witness home improvements and take home “Clean Energy Kits” filled with energy-efficient devices and user-friendly tips on how to save energy in their own homes.

Local and state representatives, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony at Edgewood, gave speeches in honor of the event. Secretary of Finance and Administration Jonathan Miller commended Rowan County and Morehead government officials for their work and dedication to the community.

“You are really fortunate to have representative John Will Stacy, Mayor David Perkins, Judge-executive Jim Nickell, Rocky Adkins and Senator Walter Blevins and the Chamber of Commerce here in your community,” Miller said. “I want to thank Judge Nickell for his commitment to this community and the all the work he does.”

Miller recognized the work and dedication of Frontier Housing.

“They are a great example for eastern Kentucky and to the world,” Miller added. “I knew there would be a large crowd here because Stacey Epperson was a part of it.”

Miller noted that he saw every young person present for the event.

“It’s great to see all the young people who are here today,” he said. “This is the green generation here. We have groups from the University of Kentucky, Morehead State University, Rowan County Senior High School and Americorp is here.”

Morehead and Rowan County will be a shining example for the state of Kentucky and for the world. Providing environmentally safe homes will bring more jobs and provide safe affordable homes to everyone, Miller added.

Frontier Housing is located 5445 Flemingsburg Road in Morehead.
