MSU Corps members gave away a car to a local family during their Mini Repair Affair event last week.
After corps members returned from working on various projects left over from Frontier Housing’s recent Repair Affair event, everyone gathered at the Park Place room at City Park. There members enjoyed lunch while some corps members, Youth Build members and a Frontier Housing member were given awards. It was during that time that MSU Corps and Kay Stiner presented a set of car keys to a Rowan County couple.
A local citizen donated a 1992 Subaru Legacy to MSU Corps. The members of the organization thought they should give it to a local family in need. MSU Corps members thought that Christian Social Services (CSS) Director Stiner would have an idea of a family that could use the vehicle, said Clark Gordon, MSU Corps member.
“This is a rare event for both MSU Corps and Christian Social Services,” Gordon said. “Kay was the facilitator for finding us a family who was in need of the car.”
Mary Harris, a social worker at CSS, said she found out about the car two days prior to receiving it.
“When I was working at CSS Monday, Kay came up to me and asked me if I wanted a car,” Harris said. “I said yes but I had to talk to Josh first.”
Harris informed her boyfriend, Josh McKenzie, about Stiner’s offer. McKenzie was unsure what to think about it.
“I couldn’t understand why someone would do this for us,” McKenzie said. “I said that I would look at it and we would see. I had no intention of saying no.”
When Harris and McKenzie received the car keys at the Mini Repair Affair lunch, they walked outside with the MSU Corps members to take a photo.
“I’m stunned,” McKenzie said as he held the keys to the car. “I’m shocked that this is really happening.”
Harris’s eyes grew wide as she took a look at the car.
“That was nice of MSU Corps to give the car to us,” Harris said. “We appreciate it.”
“I am glad we had the opportunity to provide them with a car,” said Director of MSU Corps Sherrie Bennett. “That is a step out of what we normally do.”
McKenzie said that having the car would make life simpler for his family.
“We have a toddler,” McKenzie said. “This will make taking our child back and forth to the doctor a lot easier.”
