American citizens from near and far gathered together to celebrate the 232nd anniversary of the signing of the July 4 Declaration of Independence at Friday’s fireworks show.
Those young and old waited for the show with great anticipation. Many gathered at the Viking Mart, Huddle House, Dairy Queen, Rowan County Road Department, Zane Collins Community Park and the Wal-Mart Super Center parking lot to view the fireworks.
“We came all the way from Georgetown, Kentucky and we’re waiting with bated breath to see them,” said Becky Hall.
“We came here from Atlanta. We were visiting a friend who lives here,” said Elonzo McLamore. “We came to Wal-Mart to see the fireworks.”
This year was a new venue, moved from the Jaycee Park on U.S. 60 east.
“I’m just glad to be here,” said Connie Gocci.
“It’s going to be a good one and it is awesome sitting out in the rain,” said 10-year old Morehead resident Mathew Caudill.
“I think it is a better location,” said Anna Riley, a Morehead resident.
“I like the different colors,” said six-year old Olive Hill resident Jayde Holbrook.
Although some viewers said they were expecting a more grand display, with an earlier start time, many tailgaters sat talking and visiting with friends and family. Some hosted cookouts while others shot off their own fireworks into the night sky. Children wafted their sparklers around for entertainment.
“I wish they’d already started,” said Salt Lick resident Nancy Patrick.
Fireworks were set off from B&B; Equipment Rental on KY 32 on the hilltop overlooking the Dairy Queen, Huddle House and Zane Collins Community Park. The larger fireworks were fired from Abner Construction Company property.

LRC plans to appeal judge’s ruling
FRANKFORT - The leadership of the General Assembly announced Thursday it plans to appeal Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd’s ruling that the legislature’s plan to re-draw state legislative boundaries is unconstitutional.
The Legislative Research Commission, made up of leaders of both parties and chambers which employ the legislative staff, issued a press release saying it plans to take its defense of House Bill 1, the legislation containing the new districts, directly to the Kentucky Supreme Court. -
