Rowan Countians young and old can walk, bike, rollerblade and skateboard their way to good health during Rowan County Extension Office’s 2nd Sunday community activity on Oct. 12.
Martha Perkins, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, explained the reason behind the activity, to be held at City Park.
“It is a time where communities are asked to do some kind of activity. It is a big campaign for health,” Perkins said. “It is a time to make citizens aware of their need for exercise.”
During the event city officials will close a section of town for people to walk, skateboard, jog and other activities.
“The city park will be closed to traffic from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be games for kids and adults. The games will be like what you would see in the senior games,” Perkins said. “Also there will be relays for adults and kids.”
People also have the opportunity to take a short yoga class, Perkins added.
“A couple organizations will set up an informational booth,” she said. “The Rowan County Public Library will have a corn hole game and they will bring the bookmobile for everyone.”
The Garden Club will have a booth that will feature garden products. Club members will talk to people about how gardening is a good physical activity, Perkins said.
“The Northeastern Area Health Center will do free health screenings,” she said. “They will do cholesterol and glucose screenings and they will do a Derma scan on citizens to detect facial skin damage that is caused by sun exposure.”
Citizens can call Perkins at the Rowan County Extension Office for more information at 784-5457.
