Employees of Rowan County schools hope to drop the pounds and pick up some cash. One hundred part- and full-time employees of the district have entered the Big Loser Weight Loss Challenge sponsored by Battson Drug.
“The weight loss competition was open for the entire Rowan County school district from high school to preschool,” said Battson Drug Marketing Manager Tom Gorbett.
“We had a phenomenal turnout the first week,” Gorbett said. “We’ve done this in six other areas and this was one of the biggest turnouts. Hopefully everyone will learn to pursue a healthier lifestyle through this event.
“We are doing it as a weight loss percentage because it allows more people to participate fairly,” Gorbett said. “It evens the playing field despite what you started with.
“We sponsored an event last year and we thought that we could do it a little better,” Gorbett said. “We’ve done this in seven different school districts and it just came out of a desire to help the community and teachers in the community. We came up with $1,000 to be a pretty good motivator for about anybody.”
Battson Drug partnered with Curves and Everybody and Every Ladies Fitness. Subway jumped on board and offered discounts to keep everybody motivated and pursuing a healthy lifestyle.
“Next year we are thinking about doing a community wide weight loss challenge that’s kind of on the back burner,” he said.
Those in the competition began the weighing in Jan. 25. According to Gorbett, the midway point weigh-in is March 1 with the final weigh-in April 12.
