Aug. 24, 2012 —
The Rowan County Board of Education set its 2012-2013 tax rate Tuesday at the state compensating rate of 53.2 cents per $100 of assessed real estate and tangible personal property value.
The new rate represents a five-cent increase over last year’s rate of 52.7 cents.
“The compensating rate is the amount needed to achieve the same revenue as the previous year,” said Glen Teager, district finance officer. “The rate would have been 54.2 if we had opted for the maximum four percent allowed by the state, which is what has been done over the last several years.”
The majority of public school funding comes from property taxes. A public hearing is not required when the compensating rate is adopted.
In other business, Supt. Marvin Moore presented each of the district’s school principals with accreditation certificates from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
SACS is among six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.
According to SACS, the voluntary method of quality assurance is designed to distinguish schools that successfully adhere to educational standards, continuously improve education and effectively drive student performance.
“This accreditation speaks volumes for our district and our educational accomplishments,” Moore said.
He accepted the SACS certificate for the entire district.
The school board accepted a check from Brett Traver, executive director of the Morehead-Rowan County Economic Development Council, Inc., (EDC) as part of an effort to improve Rowan County’s workforce.
“Rowan County seniors can now take the test to earn the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC),” Traver said. “This is part of a community-wide initiative to certify Rowan County as a Work Ready Community.”
The ACT test of applied mathematics, reading for information and locating information, is evidence-based and certifies someone has the essential skills needed for workforce success.
Traver raised $4,500 of the $5,000 needed from sources including the EDC, SRG Global, Hamilton Distributing and TENCO Workforce Investment Area.
“Employers like Emerson in Morehead and Cooper Standard in Mt. Sterling use this test when making hiring decisions and the hope is to expand its use to more businesses,” said Traver.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for our students, and great to have community partners pull together to help make this happen this year,” said Moore. “It is a win-win for our students and our community.”
