MARCH 5 — Morehead Tomorrow and the Streetscape Committee will unveil plans for beautifying downtown Morehead. Both entities will be hosting a forum to reveal the plans to the public on March 23.
“We have been working with a firm from Lexington called CMW Architecture,” said Terri Alderman, director of Morehead Tomorrow Terri Alderman. “We have a Streetscape Committee that has been working with CMW in the past few months giving them ideas of what we would like to see on First Street.”
The First Street Streetscape Committee is comprised of several groups of local citizens including members of city government, Morehead Tomorrow and local property owners.
“They (CMW) have come back to us with proposed plans for the street,” Alderman said, “and we are going to show the proposed plans to the public to get their input.”
To implement those proposed plans, the committee is required to get the public’s opinion of the plans, Alderman said.
“We are having the First Street Streetscape Master Plan Forum to reveal the proposed master plan for First Street,” she said. “We want their comments and if they have any suggestions.”
The revitalization project will begin from KY 32 and extend to Bridge Street, she said.
Morehead Tomorrow did not have the funds to do the project. So, the organization applied for a state grant to obtain the funds, Alderman said.
“We received a transportation enhancement grant. That grant will allow us to begin phase one,” Alderman said. “The grant was for $303,200. The grant comes from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in Frankfort.
“Phase one will allow us to install new side walks, lighting, and landscaping,” Alderman said. “Phase one will extend from N. Wilson to Bridge Street and move onto First Street.”
The First Street Streetscape Forum will be on Thursday, March 23 at 5 p.m. at the Morehead Conference Center.
Alderman encourages everyone to attend the forum.
“This is a vital part to our downtown area with the new conference center and the KFAC,” she said. “We want to make Morehead as attractive as possible. We want everyone to come out to look at the plans we have proposed.”
The Streetscape Committee and Morehead Tomorrow plan to break ground in the second or third week of June, Alderman said.
“When more grant money becomes available we hope to continue with phase two,” Alderman said.
