March 11, 2010 —     Several political signs from both parties have been stolen or vandalized in the past several weeks, according to the county attorney’s office.

Destroying or vandalizing property is considered criminal mischief and jail time and fines depend on the cost of what is damaged.

Criminal mischief under $500 is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by 90 days in jail and a $200 fine. Criminal mischief over $500 is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $500 fine.

Criminal mischief where property damage totals more than $1,000 is a felony punishable by 1-5 years in jail.

Citizens who observe the vandalism of political signs should call the Rowan County Attorney’s Office, local law enforcement or the state board of election.
