Ambulance workers hurt in wreck

An ambulance heading to St. Claire Regional Medical Center last Thursday dropped off the side of the road on KY 519 and ended up in a ditch on its side injuring three people, police said.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Chris Jones said Mark Murphy, 31, of West Liberty was operating a Morgan County ambulance when the right tire of the vehicle dropped off the roadway. Murphy lost control and the vehicle hit a big rock that caused the ambulance to flip over and it came to a rest on the driver’s side in a ditch, Jones said.

The ambulance was carrying Murphy’s co-worker and EMT Theresa Elam, 52, of West Liberty and an 83-year-old female patient who was being transported to SCR.

Elam was transported to SCR by Morehead-Rowan County EMS but was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for further evaluation for her injuries. The patient, whose name was not known at press time, was transported to SCR by Rowan County EMS. She received treatment at SCR for minor injuries obtained in the accident, police said.

Murphy also was transported by Morehead-Rowan County EMS for minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by Jones.
