Aug. 31, 2012 —
Morehead attorney Michael Campbell has almost finished hiking the 2,184.02-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT). He began his journey on March 22.
“He’s looking rough, too,” Campbell’s wife, Sheila, said. “I tell you, that’s not what he usually looks like.”
Campbell is scheduled to be home on Labor Day.
“Michael called today,” Sheila posted on Kentucky Heartwood’s blog. “He ate roadkill black bear last night. A man hit it with his car so he had it butchered. His wife shared it with Michael and some other hikers. Not the normal trail magic.”
Sheila drove to Bangor, Maine, on Aug. 17 to meet her husband. He had just completed a 100-mile hike through the wilderness.
“The sign going into the 100-mile wilderness says you must have a minimum supply of 10 days of food,” she blogged. “However, they only plan to be in the wilderness for five days. He said there will be no means of contact until they leave the wilderness.”
She met her husband and his friend, Wiffle, at the base of Mt. Katahdin before the three began a five-mile journey up the mountain.
“The hike up Mt. Katahdin is…straight up,” she wrote. “This will be a hard 10 miles, especially for me. I’m excited though. I can’t even imagine the emotions a thru hiker has on top of this mountain. I’m sure I will cry just watching them.”
Sheila says Michael missed 81 miles of the AT in the Connecticut/New York area because he came home for a funeral. To make up for that, she drove the 81 miles (with food and supplies) while he walked.
He started at Springer Mountain in Georgia and hiked through 14 states. Michael has been averaging in the upper teens in miles per day and his longest day hike was 30 miles.
He will contact The Morehead News after he returns for an interview. To read Sheila’s and Michael’s blog, visit www.kentuckyheartwood.org.
