Dec. 10, 2010 —
Robert G. Stevens, an attorney from Crestview Hills in Northern Kentucky, will take office in February as the first lay person to chair the Board of Directors of St. Claire Regional Medical Center.
His appointment was announced at Thursday’s board meeting by Sister Marla Monahan, outgoing chair, who will remain on the board.
A specialist in health care law, Stevens will be the first person to serve as chair who is not a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame, the Catholic order which founded SCR in 1963. He is in his fourth term as a board member and has been involved with the hospital for 25 years as legal counsel.
Stevens has been a member of the law firm of Dressman, Benzinger, & LaVelle since 1982 and a partner since 1988.
He also is president and co-founder of Bottom Line Systems, Inc. a managed care consulting and audit firm that serves more than 100 hospitals and other health care providers in 20 states.
St. Claire will not be his first pioneering assignment for the Sisters of Notre Dame. He recently served as the first lay person to chair the board at Notre Dame Academy in Covington.
“We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Stevens as the new chair of the Board of Directors,” said Sister Monahan. “He has been a friend to the Sisters of Notre Dame and to St. Claire for many years.”
She continued: “Mr. Stevens brings to this leadership role, not only familiarity with SCR, but also a depth of experience and knowledge of the health care system, which will be of great benefit to the board and the hospital.”
“It is an extraordinary privilege for me to be asked to serve as chair of St. Claire Regional’s board,” Stevens said. “The Sisters of Notre Dame, the hospital staff and the medical staff have built St. Claire Regional into an organization that is vital to the health of residents of Northeastern Kentucky and essential to the success of the entire region.”
He added: “I am excited to work with St. Claire Regional’s talented leadership team as they respond to the challenges of health care reform and as they further enhance one of Kentucky’s finest hospitals. All of the board members are honored that we have the opportunity to be a part of the Sisters’ mission to serve residents of Morehead and the surrounding areas.”
The new chair received his legal education at the University of Cincinnati College of Law and a master’s degree in health administration at Xavier University.
Stevens and his wife, Cathy, have three daughters Kelly, Jennifer and Kristen. Kelly is a physician assistant in Tampa, Florida; Jennifer is a graduate student in Xavier University’s master’s in nursing program; and Kristen is a senior at Xavier University.
Mark J. Neff, SCR’s president and CEO, became the first lay person to serve in that capacity when he was appointed.
