March 11, 2010 — A Morehead Police Department official is urging the public to help fight the rise of burglaries.
The MPD is investigating two burglaries that occurred during the day Wednesday. The thefts occurred at 105 Riley Street and 646 Maplewood Drive. They are under investigation by officers Chris Waltz and Derek Howard.
“We’ve seen an increase in car thefts and now we’ve seen a few more burglaries in the past few days,” MPD Chief Mike Adams said. “Lock your house, lock your cars and look out for one another. If you see something suspicious we will check it out. We’ll do the best we can to check it out as quickly as we can.
“Lots of times these are crimes of opportunity,” Adams said. “A lot of times people go by and check car doors. If you see a person going from car to car, call us. If you see somebody around a house you don’t recognize and they go from one door to another, call us.
“We’ve seen a little bit of an increase and it’s been a trend in other communities throughout Kentucky. We want to do everything we can to stop it here,” Adams said. “We need the public’s help, they are our best eyes and ears.”
“I’m afraid that we may have more of these (burglaries),” Adams said. “People get things they can sell for drugs or drugs and because of the times being like they are, we need to work together.”
If anyone has information on either burglary they are asked to contact their local law enforcement agency or the MPD.

Parking issues top Council agenda
Administrative matters took up much of the agenda at Monday’s regular meeting of the Morehead City Council, but the perennial downtown parking issue arose again. Council discussed problems with persons being ticketed during downtown events such as Noon Tunes, and passed a motion directing Mayor David Perkins to identify means to encourage citizens to patronize Main Street businesses over the summer, which may include relaxing downtown parking rules.
