June 19, 2012 — The Rowan County Board of Education voted unanimously to extend Supt. Marvin Moore’s contract an additional year after giving him a superior performance rating during last week’s regular meeting.
Board chairman Larry Coldiron said that in previous years the board had done the evaluation behind closed doors.
“We don’t see the need to do that. We have nothing to hide and nothing but positive things to say about Supt. Moore,” said Coldiron. “We are behind him 100 percent.”
The board is required to do an annual evaluation of the superintendent that can be done either verbally or in writing.
Six core standards with multiple sub-categories were used to evaluate Moore’s performance: Relationship with the Rowan County Board of Education, community relationships, staff and personnel relationships, educational leadership, business and finance and personal qualities.
Moore was given a numerical rating of five in each category giving him a “superior performance” score within each category.
“Our district is very fortunate to have a superintendent like Mr. Moore,” Coldiron said. “I make the motion to extend his contract by an additional year.”
The board unanimously agreed to the extension. With this additional year, Moore now has a three year contract.
Moore’s salary is $115,724.91.
In other business Tuesday, the board approved the KISTA (Kentucky Interlocal School Transportation Association) resolution to finance the purchase of five new buses.
The $475,844 being borrowed through KISTA is interest free over the 10-year agreement period. Janie Davenport, transportation director, said the district would be ordering two 78-person buses, two 66-person buses and one special needs bus, all with digital cameras.
“The district has not purchased any new buses since 2010,” Davenport said. “We are currently running 58 buses.”
At the end of Tuesday’s meeting, Coldiron told the board and attendees his last board meeting would be in December.
“I am leaving on my own after 24 years on the school board,” he said. “I just feel as though it is my time to step down.”
