All citizens are urged to get some exercise during Rowan County’s 2nd Sunday Family Fun Day event Oct. 10 at the Don Greenhill City Park. Raven Ford, extension agent for Rowan County 4H Youth Development, said the event would be enjoyable for families.
“It is time for families to stop and hang out and bond together,” Ford said.
The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and Cooperative Extension Office were the first public agencies to promote this event. The idea originated from Bogota, Columbia. Bogota officials close more than 70 miles of roadway so residents in the area could exercise such as bike riding, walking, and jogging, according to the 2nd Sunday website.
Other communities have hosted similar events. However, Kentucky is the first state to adopt and implement the idea. In 2009, Kentucky’s governor and General Assembly endorsed the event Oct. 11 as Second Sunday Kentucky, the website said.
“It was originally a family consumer science program though UK,” Ford said. “For Rowan County, it is through the 4H Club. We will be closing the Don Greenhill City Park from 2 to 4 p.m. for this. What they hope for is that cities would block off sidewalks, streets, and parks for recreational activities. Families can enjoy activities such as football and softball toss, cornhole tournament, kick ball, NFL punt, pass, and kick, walking, volleyball, Zumba, environmental activities, health screenings, and a meet and greet session with the Eagles.”
The event is free and open to the public. T-shirts will be given away to the first 50 participants and door prizes will be given away throughout the event.
Second Sunday is sponsored by the Rowan County Extension Office, AHEC, St. Claire Regional Medical Center, Gateway Health Department, Morehead Parks and Recreation, City of Morehead, Sustainable Morehead, Morehead State University Athletics and the Diabetes Coalition.
Kentucky is consistently ranked among the top 10 in the nation for obesity and obesity-related diseases. More than 20,000 people in 101 counties participated in the 2009 event.
Don Greenhill City Park is located off Bridge Street in Morehead. For questions contact Ford at 784-5457 or by at email rcford@uky.edu.
