Roe Horton, WWII POW, dies

July 24, 2012 —       James Monroe (Roe) Horton Jr., 89, former member of the Army’s elite Darby’s Rangers in World War II, died Friday after a brief illness.

      Horton was drafted into the Army in 1943 at age 20. He was captured and held captive by Germany in January 1944.

      He was a prisoner of war for 15 months.

      Horton was a Church of God member who often sang at funerals, church services and revivals.

      Burial with full military honors by American Legion Post 126, where he was a lifetime member, will be today at New Sill Cemetery.
