May 21, 2012 — Rowan Judge-Executive Jim Nickell said efforts to make precincts at fire stations more accessible to elderly and handicapped voters are nearing completion, just in time for today’s primary election.
“All of the fire chiefs examined their facilities and found no accessibility problems with doors and entrances,” Nickell said.
Workers from the county road department yesterday laid blacktop at the Farmers station on KY 801 north to address concerns about gravel lots impeding mobility.
Nickell said the lot at Haldeman-Hayes Crossing FD was paved last year. The judge-executive said the Bluestone precinct in Lakeview Heights was built with state funds and according to ADA requirements.
Earlier this month, a decision to move all outlying precincts to the Morehead Conference Center because of accessibility issues was met with criticism. The decision later was rescinded.
