School board changes spring break

July 20, 2012 —     The Rowan County Board of Education voted Tuesday to change spring break to March 18-22, 2013, to coincide with Morehead State University’s calendar.

The break previously was scheduled March 11-15, which Supt. Marvin Moore said was the original date for the college break.

He said a breakdown in communications between the calendar committees for both systems prompted the change.

Board member Bill Redwine said breaks should continue to coincide for the benefit of student teachers as well as families that work and attend school in both systems.

“I’ve always advocated keeping the calendars together,” he said.

MSU also changed its fall break to Oct. 12 and 15, 2012, but the board opted to keep the county’s Fall Break on Oct. 11 and 12. There was some discussion of changing those dates, but the board said that school principals were opposed to the idea of splitting the break over two weeks.

Board Chair Larry Coldiron welcomed Rick Whelan to the monthly meeting and advised that Whelan will be running for his seat on the non-partisan board in the November election.

Mike Matthews shared progress on the implementation of SB 1, Unbridled Learning. He said a recent training session for educators focused on how formative assessments and feedback can help improve student performance and outcomes.

The board approved an agreement to employ Terry Anderson as energy manager for Rowan and six other county school districts.

Moore said Rowan, Bath, Mason, Fleming, Menifee, Bracken and Lewis Counties have formed a consortium to employ Anderson to monitor energy use and identify avenues for continued cost savings for the districts.

Rowan’s portion of Anderson’s salary is $11,160, and each district’s portion is based upon the square footage of its buildings.

Finance Director Glen Teager said Anderson has already secured more than $20,000 in energy rebates. Moore added that Anderson has saved the district more than $19,000 by identifying overcharges from Kentucky Utilities.

“He’s more than paid for himself, and we feel like keeping him on will be money well spent,” Moore said.
