Tourism says no fireworks this year

July 20, 2012 —     The canceled Fourth of July fireworks will stay canceled, the Morehead Tourism Commission decided Thursday.

Instead, the Commission will help fund the air show planned Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Morehead-Rowan County Clyde A. Thomas Regional Airport.

“We looked at various options but a majority of our members felt promoting the free air show would be a better investment for the benefit of the community,” said Keith Kappes, tourism chairman.

Tourism originally planned fireworks shows on July 3 at Cave Run Lake and July 4 near Walmart but the events were canceled because of a ban on open burning and fireworks due to drought conditions.

In other business, the Commission selected Rowan County Christmas and Christian Social Services to share the profits from this year’s Morehead Arts and Eats Festival in downtown Morehead on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Rowan County Christmas was the beneficiary of last year’s inaugural event.

The Morehead Conference Center hosted 412 events in the fiscal year ending June 30, compared with 389 the previous year, according to MCC Manager Joy Brown, who is acting executive director of tourism.
