2nd Community Day, air show at airport

Sept. 21, 2012 —     The second annual Community Day and Air Show at the Morehead-Rowan County Clyde A. Thomas Regional Airport will be this Saturday.

The community is invited to enjoy the free air show, inflatables for the kids, live radio remote and DJ, static displays and tours of the hangars and terminal while enjoying many food vendors.     A $5 all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast is set from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Bring your lawn chairs for the free air show, beginning at noon.

Tethered hot air balloon rides will begin at 7:30 a.m. (weather permitting) and will cost $10.

“Kids ages 8-17 years old can sign up Saturday for free airplane rides on Sunday through our Young Eagles program,” said Tracey Potter, airport manager.

“Federal Aviation Administration regulations require us to shut down the runway for the event,” said Mike Gray, airport board chairman. “Kids wanting to ride in an airplane can sign up Saturday for Sunday flight times.”

A replica C-130 cargo plane will taxi kids at the event on the runway.

Skydivers will get the two-hour airshow started at noon.

“Several aeronautics performances will take place during the air show,” Potter said. “Cliff Robinson, Rob ‘Tico’ Lacerda and Emerson Stewart are the headliners.”

Robinson will fly his modified Stearman PT17 bi-plane. The plane has a 500-horsepower Pratt and Whitney fuel-injected engine, four aileron (devices on wings used for control) and an inverted fuel and oil system that carries him to great heights and through old fashioned  barnstorming-type action.

Lacerda, a 19-year airline pilot who currently flies a Boing 767 for work, will be performing stunts in a 1,200 pound magnum pitts aircraft.

“Emerson will be doing two different shows,” said Potter. “He will perform one of the shows without power. He will climb to a certain altitude, cut the engine and perform the stunts without power.”
