He writes and sings songs about life, love and heartbreak. George Molton, owner of Molton’s, located at the Heck’s Plaza, will be celebrating the debut of his CD Friday, Sept. 11.
Molton said the CD tells a story.
“Each song is either about my life or someone I have met,” Molton said. “The CD is called ‘Life.’”
“I’ve written all of the songs recorded on this CD except two,“ Molton said. “What is on the CD is a collection of the songs I have written from the time I started in 1994 until now.”
The CD was recorded in Georgetown, Molton said.
“I didn’t record it in Nashville because I wanted it to be a Kentucky deal,” he said. “I recorded it with my band Ninety Proof. We had a couple of extra players in the band but that was it.”
He said recording studios in Nashville tend to have a specific way of recording albums. This time he chose not to record his CD in Nashville because he had a different vision of how he wanted it recorded and featured. He said he felt it was better to have the CD recorded in Kentucky because he had a specific group of people he wanted to work with to produce the CD.
“If you do a Nashville album, you get an album with music they (Nashville recording producers) think everyone wants to hear,” Molton said. “I wanted to stay away from that. The songs that get the most attention and went over well were the songs that I have written and performed in clubs and fairs for many years,” he said.
Connecting with his audience is very important to Molton.
“People related to them,” he said. “We’re sitting in a bar right now so we’re dealing with people who are 21 years and older. We’re in an area where you have a lot of working people. You have a lot of farmers. You have a lot of people who don’t get or understand or care about Taylor Swift singing about her 15-year-old crush. Not that it is bad. I’m not downing Taylor Swift. She is a great artist and a great songwriter.”
Molton said he thought his CD turned out great.
“It is the most country-sounding music I have produced,” he said. “It is the most personal CD I have ever been a part of creating.”
The people who know Molton best said they were happy for him.
“We are all real excited about his CD,” said Molton’s co-owner Fran Wagers. “It was a long-time coming. We wanted to push to get it out sooner but you know we wanted to get it when it was ready.”
Wagers said she’s listened to the CD.
“There are a couple songs on it that he sings here already,” Wagers said. “It is really good. I think people will be pleased with it.”
Base player for Ninety Proof Hank Rose talked about what it was like producing the music for the CD.
“Everything else George has done has been in Nashville so it was great that we got to do our own thing,” Rose said. “It has George’s own sound.”
He has a cut in the CD.
“I am really excited that he included a song that I wrote in his CD,” he said. “I think George did a very good job producing the CD.”
“It is nice,“ said drummer Curtis Lee. “We’ve been doing this for quite a while. It’s a good thing. We like it. We want to see what is going to happen. I am anxious to see what people think about it.”
Lee said the material is more of a country sound rather than a pop-rock sound.
Molton will be hosting a celebration at Molton’s bar on Friday, Sept. 11. Molton’s is open 6 p.m. until midnight. Copies of the CD will be available for purchase.
