Sept. 28, 2012 —
Rowan County Middle School teacher Mike Kash has been selected as one of 24 outstanding Kentucky educators who will receive the 2013 Teacher Achievement Award (TAA).
The Kentucky Department of Education and Ashland Oil Inc. will honor the 24 educators with a ceremony at the State Capitol on Oct. 17.
These teachers qualify to compete for the 2013 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award which will be announced next month.
“I am truly honored to have been selected to be a part of this outstanding group of educators,” said Kash. “It is a privilege to be among them.”
Kash has been an educator, coach and bus driver in the Rowan County school district for 28 years.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement from Eastern Kentucky University, an associate degree from Morehead State University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from MSU.
“I came to Rowan County in 1976 and never left,” he said.
Kash has coached 52 teams in baseball, football and basketball in his 28-year career in Rowan County.
He also has dedicated 14 years to Morehead Parks and Recreation Department as a coach and pool manager.
His three grandchildren currently attend school and play sports in Rowan County.
Award judging was conducted in August by a blue-ribbon panel of veteran educators, many with more than 25 years of teaching experience.
Applications included information on nominees’ teaching philosophy, teaching experiences and involvement in their respective communities as well as letters of recommendation from peers, students, parents and administrators.
“Mike is very deserving of this award,” said Supt. Marvin Moore. “He has a passion for his job and a commitment to do what is best for our kids.”
The 24 TAA recipients will receive cash awards. One elementary, middle and high school teacher will receive the Kentucky Teachers of the Year award at the banquet. From those three finalists, the Kentucky Teacher of the Year will be named and will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
