Police recover Honor Guard rifles

Oct. 2, 2012 —        Six M-1 Garand rifles used by an American Legion post in Western Kentucky were recovered last week by Kentucky State Police Post 8 in Morehead.

Trooper N. Robinson arrested Josh McKee, 39, and Amanda Spencer (age unknown), of Tea Run Road in Fleming County on felony warrants on Sept. 12 and observed the six World War vintage rifles with white straps inside the residence.

After a two-week investigation, Robinson was able to confirm the rifles belonged to the American Legion in Calvert City in Marshall County.

“The rifles were fully restored,” said Post 236 Honor Guard member David Green. “The thieves had to break through four locks to get to the rifles stored within a gun case at the Legion post.”

“Fortunately, we had back-up rifles to use for ceremonies such as military funerals since their Sept. 11 disappearance,” said Green.

The rifles have an estimated value of more than $10,000.

Both suspects are being held at the Mason County jail for receiving stolen property over $10,000.
