The Morehead Career Center, 126 Bradley Avenue, had many local citizens attend its open house Friday afternoon. Business Services Coordinator for TENCO Workforce Investment Area and Buffalo Trace Area Development District Owen McNeill said he was happy with the turnout.
“Attendance has been phenomenal,” McNeill said. “We had an open house in Ashland about a month ago, we had last month in Maysville and today’s event wraps up our series of open houses. We can attribute today’s attendance to being the best we’ve ever had. We’ve already seen 70 to 80 people.”
McNeill said it was necessary to have an open house.
“The services have always been here,” McNeill said. “I felt we needed a reintroduction and let people know we have different avenues we can take to give people who are unemployed.”
He said the unemployment rate is currently running at the national average or 10 percent. This means one out of 10 Americans are out of a job that are looking for one.
“Everyone is aware of how the economy has been and where it is going,” he said. “I feel we are at a plateau. I suspect that the economy and the unemployment rate will get better.”
The success of the open house is also largely in part of the efforts of The Morehead News, WQXX, McNeill added.
McNeill said his career center is a one-stop career center.
“The main premise is that we are more than an employment office,” he said. “We are a compound of many different services.”
