A Bath County man is housed in the Montgomery County Regional Jail with his bond set for $50,000 cash after he allegedly disguised himself as a mortgage lender and tried to sell mobile homes, police said.
Twenty-seven-year-old Daniel McCarty of Owingsville was arrested and charged with theft by deception over $10,000 after Vanderbilt Mortgage Company of Knoxville, Tenn., tipped off police.
“He was practicing without a real estate license and representing himself like he was working for this company,” Kentucky State Police Detective Larry Bowling said. “But he was not a part of this company.”
McCarty attempted to sell two mobile homes to Francine Copher of Mt. Sterling and when she contacted the company about the transaction, it was discovered that McCarty did not work for Vanderbilt Mortgage Company.
“This is the second victim that I’m aware of, because he had received a down payment from another,” Bowling said.
McCarty had set up for Copher to bring $15,930 to complete the purchase of the mobile homes and meet with him. McCarty received the check and gave her a fraudulent bill of sales. Police, notified ahead of time, had arranged to be in the area and arrested McCarty after a traffic stop.
The investigation is ongoing by the KSP.
