Trinity Christian Fellowship has adopted the slogan “doing life together” and in the mix of that came the launch of their new college ministry “1016” by College minister Adam Jones.
Jones and college-age students take their faith out of the church and into a restaurant from time to time to just share the love of Christ in an atmosphere where the students can feel comfortable.
“The ministry name is taken from John 10:16,” Jones said. “Jesus is speaking and he says that sheep from other flocks will hear my voice and become one flock with one Shepherd and it really just spoke to me.”
“It took about two years of prayer to really prepare me for it,” Jones said. “I wasn’t exactly a very mature guy a couple years ago and I don’t think I would have don’t very well with it. It was just tons of prayer and meeting with our Pastor Wade (Muncy) this summer and talking about what the vision was for 1016 and what we wanted to accomplish and it just kind of clicked and all fell into place. It was just easy to be the leader.”
“We both committed to spend time in prayer over it,” Trinity Christian Fellowship Founding Pastor Wade Muncy said. “But it was pretty much just God leading Adam and giving this vision to him.”
“In general we both felt like and saw a need where students needed to get connected in an environment and express their growth and walk of faith and a place where they can be themselves and experience each other an have fun doing it,” Muncy said. “They can get together and enjoy fellowship without a tight agenda and share life together and work through questions together.”
1016 is not what you’d call traditional.
“The vision for 1016 is to offer an environment for college students to come and fellowship,” Jones said. “And its not necessarily that we’re going to be real ‘churchy’ and do all these things that people in this area expect like prayer meetings and all that stuff, and we do have those things, but we have several 1016 events.”
“We have a 1016 Bible Study on Sundays at 6 p.m. Then we have what we call 1016 road trips and those are on usually Fridays or Saturday at 10:16 p.m. where we go to Waffle House or Huddle House or Smokey Valley or what have you. We also have community service events and we do have a prayer meeting.”
“But the road trips are our main focus for students that don’t know Christ,” Jones said. “It’s an easy time for them to come and just fellowship and not worry about having to fit a mold. They get to come somewhere where they feel like they are part of a family and I think that is really important for college students.”
“Well, other than the fact that it is freaking awesome, it’s a good time to be with people that love Christ,” Jones said. “The thing that I find attractive about 1016 is that you don’t have to be somebody you’re not and that the people there care about you. The students bond together and they form their own family. I know most of the students don’t have their family here in Morehead. It’s a really neat dynamic to see students get together and then forming almost like a sub-family here in Morehead because of 1016. And it’s not because of 1016 because if 1016 wasn’t in place God would put something else in place to make that happen. But I’m really happy to see their hunger to learn and to grow and to really fellowship and be a family. At Trinity we have the slogan ‘doing life together’ and that’s really important, that’s the heart of God and that’s what he wants us to do.”
“I’d like to see it become something that college students really get excited about and come to,” Jones said. “At the same time I think it’s just important that college students go where they feel called. I really hope that God uses 1016 in a way that I know he can.”
“If you don’t have a home church, I would love to see you come out to Trinity and really give it a try,” Jones said. “If you do have a church you need to go to that church and get plugged in as much as you can.”
“What we wanted to create at Trinity we wanted to create and atmosphere of unity and we are one body no matter pasts or backgrounds to help each other,” Muncy said. It’s about the body (of Christ) helping each other and even though we are created and called to different things it is till one body. It’s where you can see the good and bad together and it’s more than just church it’s an extension of a family.”
