Shoplifters with drugs in their pockets seem to be a theme lately seen by Wal-Mart officials. The Morehead Police Department was called to the store on two separate occasions at the end of last month.
In the first of the non-related incidents, the MPD was called to “discount city” Oct. 25 at 5:23 p.m. to a shoplifting complaint.
The MPD arrived to find Wal-Mart officials with two suspects in custody after they allegedly were observed putting merchandise in a female’s purse. Jessica Baker, 24, of Frenchburg was charged with theft by unlawful taking. Wilford R. Allen, 35, of Clearfield, was charged with theft by unlawful taking and possession of a controlled substance first-degree, and possession of a controlled substance third-degree.
According to police, a search revealed Xanax and oxycodone in Allen’s possession. The MPD found $59.99 worth of stolen merchandise on Baker and $2 in stolen merchandise on Allen.
Both were taken to the Rowan County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing by MPD officer Jeremy Cauley.
In the second shoplifting complaint at Wal-Mart, the MPD responded on Friday, Oct. 30.
Wal-Mart’s loss prevention team noticed a subject allegedly taking rings from their packaging and various other items and concealing them in her purse at 4:30 p.m. After the subject had passed all points of purchase she was taken into custody by Wal-Mart until the MPD arrived.
Tonya L. Bain, 27, of Morehead was charged with theft by unlawful taking and possession of a controlled substance first-degree for allegedly having an oxycodone pill in her possession upon arrest.
Bain was taken to jail. The investigation is ongoing by Cauley.
In a non-related story, the MPD is asking for information from the public about a burglary that occurred between the hours of 7 p.m. Oct. 30 to 10 a.m. Oct. 31 at Wholesale Autoparts.
The thieves broke a chain holding a gate that contained welding gas cylinders. Four cylinders were taken: two containing argon, one oxygen, and one acetylene.
The MPD have no leads in the case and are asking anyone with more information to contact them or their local law enforcement agency.
The incident is under investigation by MPD Sgt. Patrick Smith.

Parking issues top Council agenda
Administrative matters took up much of the agenda at Monday’s regular meeting of the Morehead City Council, but the perennial downtown parking issue arose again. Council discussed problems with persons being ticketed during downtown events such as Noon Tunes, and passed a motion directing Mayor David Perkins to identify means to encourage citizens to patronize Main Street businesses over the summer, which may include relaxing downtown parking rules.
