Two killed on I-64

Grayson man was hauling bull to market

Two people are dead after a car and a truck hauling cattle overturned after a crash on Interstate 64 westbound in Rowan County Saturday.

At 8:54 a.m. Saturday, a 2004 Ford pickup truck, driven by 57-year old Johnny Blevins of Grayson, was traveling near mile marker 145 when it swerved into the passing lane striking a 2005 Dodge Neon, according to police. The Ford F-250 was pulling a stock trailer with a bull on board when the collision occurred ejecting Blevins and his nephew, Devin Campbell, 21, of Lexington. The truck and trailer overturned into the median, along with the Neon coming to rest partially on top of Campbell.

“The truck was carrying a trailer with a bull in it and when the vehicle rolled, the bull was thrown out also,” Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt said. “We were told they were taking the bull to the market and during the accident the trailer rolled and the bull was thrown out of the trailer.

“Initially we were concerned because the bull was agitated and was in the middle of the scene,” Northcutt said. “But it calmed down and then left the scene with the assistance of experienced farmers that were passing by.

“After some phone calls were made, Nick and Nathan Pecco of Pecco Farms responded to the scene with another cattle trailer and assisted emergency officials,” Northcutt said.

Charles Ison, 29, of Grayson, who had been operating the Neon, was taken to St. Claire Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Northcutt pronounced Blevins and Campbell dead at the scene.

According to police reports, no safety belts were in use in either vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Trooper Joe Veeneman. The Rowan County EMS and Morehead Fire-Rescue also responded to the scene with Morehead Police Department Accident Reconstructionist Mark Hammonds providing assistance to KSP officials.

Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is arranging funeral arrangements for Campbell and Blevins.
