The legend of the third weekend in September continues this year as, after a short time away, Marty Stevens returns as the owner and promoter of Poppy Mountain. Stevens sold ownership of the mountain to Cruise International three years ago but now takes back over the reins of the festival that he started in 1991.
“There’s no festival in the United States that has what we have to offer and has the size crowds and as many bands,” Stevens said. “There are close to a hundred bands this year. Bluegrass is bigger here than anywhere. There’s country shows and rock n’ roll shows that’s bigger, but as far as bluegrass it’s number one.”
Hitting this year’s stage will be acts like John Anderson, Junior Brown, Marty Raybon, Ralph Stanley, Lonesome River Band and IIIrd Tyme Out. Included in the lineup is showcase bands from the local area, according to Stevens.
This year’s festival will feature a brand new main stage, 40 food vendors and games and rides for kids, Stevens said.
“Also bring your 4-wheelers and golf carts and ride free,” Stevens said.
According to Stevens, tickets for the whole weekend are $100. This year’s festival runs Sept. 14-18.

Parking issues top Council agenda
Administrative matters took up much of the agenda at Monday’s regular meeting of the Morehead City Council, but the perennial downtown parking issue arose again. Council discussed problems with persons being ticketed during downtown events such as Noon Tunes, and passed a motion directing Mayor David Perkins to identify means to encourage citizens to patronize Main Street businesses over the summer, which may include relaxing downtown parking rules.
