Campground attendance suffers from extreme heat

July 6, 2012 — The two campgrounds at Cave Run Lake lost business this week after expecting to be filled because of the July 4th holiday.

“It was just too hot,” said Don Holden, area manager for Twin Knobs Recreation Area. “The electrical outages and cancellation of fireworks hurt us as well.”

The campground’s campsites which typically feature a source for electricity were still without power Thursday after strong winds damaged electric lines Friday and Sunday.

Holden said despite the low number of campers, the lake had more than 3,000 day users, which includes boaters on the water and swimmers at the beach.

“We've been getting some positive feedback on the recent improvements in the area,” Holden said.

Some of these improvements include restored restrooms as well as better traffic flow to and from the lake.

A spokesperson for Zilpo Recreation Area said there were two cancellations for the week. Also, there were more empty campsites than normal for the season, due to the extreme heat and canceling of the fireworks.
