Sept. 7, 2012 —
Six alleged heroin traffickers were arrested early yesterday morning after a search warrant was served at an apartment at 50 Rose Road in Clearfield.
Rowan County sheriff’s deputies, with assistance from Morehead State University and Kentucky State police, arrested Eric Stewart, 35, and Calvin Stevens, 37, both of Detroit, who were allegedly bringing the drug to the Morehead area.
Stewart and Stevens apparently were using local residents to distribute the drugs here.
Arrested with them at the scene were Justin Schrader, 27, Jerry Brown, 41, Samantha Dunn, 18, and Tammy Bailey, 39. All claimed the Rose Road address as their own.
According to Rowan County Chief Deputy Sheriff Joe Cline, a golf ball sized “lump” of heroin was located inside the apartment, along with a sizable quantity of Xanax and oxycodone pills.
More than $1,000 in cash was seized at the residence with multiple individually-wrapped packets of heroin that sheriff’s deputies said was how the heroin was packaged for resale.
“We said several months ago that it appeared heroin could be moving into this area after some earlier arrests,” Cline stated. “We now are shifting our focus to the northern drug pipeline in our efforts to fight illegal drugs in Rowan County.”
Cline told The Morehead News that oxycodone prices have reached a street price of $45 to 50 per pill and that dealers are charging $40 for a packet of heroin containing a one-tenth gram of cut heroin.
“We suspect that heroin suppliers from Detroit are trying to work their way into our community by recruiting locals to actually do the selling,” Cline added.
Stewart is charged with trafficking in heroin two grams or more, trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and parole violation for a federal counterfeiting charge in Michigan.
Stevens is charged with trafficking in heroin two grams or more, trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
Bailey and Schrader are both charged with trafficking in heroin two grams or greater and trafficking in a controlled substance.
Brown is charged with trafficking in heroin two grams or greater.
Dunn is charged with possession of a controlled substance first and second degree and possession of marijuana.
All six are being held without bond at the Rowan County Detention Center.
