Aug. 17, 2012 —
Randy Morris, 24, was arrested Saturday by Morehead police after Danny Blevins, director of Rowan County EMS, filed a complaint in Rowan District Court.
Blevins stated that on July 23 Morris joined in an emergency medical response in traffic to follow an ambulance driven by EMT Wesley Helterbrand who observed Morris’ vehicle driving too closely.
Morris allegedly pulled in front of Lt. Jarrod Gilliam, who was also responding to the emergency medical call, who observed Morris turning on his four-way flashers and running through a stop light at Flemingsburg Road and Second Street and then running a stop sign while on Second Street, nearly causing a collision with another vehicle.
When at the scene, Gilliam, a firefighter with the Morehead Fire Department, questioned Morris about his reason for following the ambulance. Morris told Gilliam he was a firefighter with the Morehead Fire Department.
Gilliam said he asked Morris to remain at the scene until Assistant Chief John Northcutt arrived.
Morris allegedly left the scene.
Gilliam gave MPD Sgt. Derrick Blevins a description of the vehicle as well as the name the defendant used. Blevins apparently knew Morris from previous encounters and obtained a photograph for Gilliam who positively identified him.
An arrest warrant was issued Aug. 10. Morris is charged with operating on a suspended license, following an emergency vehicle too closely, disregarding a stop sign, improper stopping at flashing red light, impersonating a public servant and wanton endangerment second degree.
